Kerala Pilots e-Bus Charging via Inductive Roads in Thiruvananthapuram

In a world-first trial, Thiruvananthapuram has launched e-buses equipped to charge wirelessly via inductive road plates installed along a pilot corridor. As the bus passes over concealed coils embedded in the road, its battery receives incremental charging—removing the need for large onboard battery packs. A 5-km route covering tourist areas, IT hubs, and educational institutions is under trial. The bus can operate all day using intermittent charging. The trial has reported energy transfer efficiency of over 80%. Maintenance costs are lower than conventional fast-charging depots. City transport planners are analyzing results for potential expansion to major city routes. The system leverages renewable energy fed into the charging grid, making it a carbon-neutral transit model.
