Punjab Develops Farmer Bio-Char Units for Soil Health

Punjab Agricultural University has launched mobile bio-char production units that convert crop stubble into charcoal to improve soil health and reduce air pollution. The machines are operated by local farmer collectives and can process up to 2 tons of paddy residue per day. The produced bio-char is applied to fields as an organic amendment, reducing chemical fertilizer use and enhancing carbon retention in soil. In Ludhiana and Sangrur, pilot plots have shown 15% yield increases in wheat crops. The state offers a 70% subsidy for community-owned units and plans to introduce 200 more by the end of the year. This approach supports sustainable agriculture and stubble management.
