To combat the effects of extreme heat and sandstorms, the Rajasthan government has launched a desert-resilient housing scheme for rural communities in Barmer and Jaisalmer. The homes are designed using local stone, lime plaster, and sloped thatched roofing, which naturally regulate indoor temperatures. Each unit includes rainwater harvesting, solar lighting, and shaded courtyards. Over 500 houses have been built as part of the first phase. Residents have reported a 5–7°C drop in indoor temperatures compared to tin-roof structures. The design draws from traditional Rajasthani architecture with modern structural reinforcement. The project is supported by UN Habitat and is seen as a model for climate-adaptive housing in arid regions.
