Kerala’s Literacy Rate Rises to 98.2% After New Campaign

Kerala has once again solidified its status as India’s most literate state, with a new survey showing a 98.2% literacy rate following its “Reading for All” initiative. The campaign, launched by the state’s Education Department, focused on adult literacy, school dropouts, and tribal populations. Thousands of volunteers were trained to conduct night classes and home visits, especially in backward districts like Wayanad and Idukki. Mobile libraries and digital learning kiosks were deployed in remote villages. State officials credit the improvement to technology-enabled learning tools and strong community participation. The program also included incentives for parents to send children back to school. International organizations have praised Kerala’s model as a replicable framework for inclusive education. Despite the milestone, officials emphasize that the next focus will be digital literacy and skill development. The campaign represents Kerala’s continued investment in human capital as a foundation for long-term development and social equity.
