Tamil Nadu Opens Green Hydrogen R&D Lab in Chennai

In a step toward energy transition, Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency has inaugurated a Green Hydrogen Research & Development Lab in Chennai. The facility focuses on low-cost electrolysis, hydrogen storage, and fuel-cell application in rural mobility. In collaboration with IIT Madras and private firms, the lab has already developed a 2 kW hydrogen fuel-cell prototype designed for off-grid usage. Tamil Nadu aims to use the lab’s outputs to power coastal fishing boats and irrigation pumps in the long term. The initiative positions the state as a leader in alternative energy research, with an annual budget of ₹50 crore allocated for green innovation.
