India’s Solar Power Milestone Reaches 80 GW, Eyes 100 GW by 2026

India has achieved a major milestone by crossing 80 gigawatts (GW) of installed solar power capacity, making it the fifth-largest solar producer globally. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy reported that large-scale utility projects account for nearly 70% of this capacity, while rooftop and off-grid solar contribute the rest. States like Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu lead with significant investments in solar parks and rooftop systems. The growth is attributed to favorable policies, falling solar panel prices, and a robust push by both government and private players. The central government aims to reach 100 GW of solar capacity by 2026, with a focus on hybrid energy parks and green hydrogen integration. Challenges like land acquisition and transmission constraints remain, but reforms are underway to fast-track clearances and grid connectivity. India’s rapid solar expansion not only strengthens its energy security but also contributes to its global climate commitments under the Paris Agreement.
